30 Year High School Reunion

30 Year Reunion Memories

Clarke Central High School's Class of 1986 held its 30 year reunion the weekend of June 10-12, 2016 in Athens, Georgia.

Activities began on Friday, June 10 with an informal gathering of classmates at Little Kings Shuffle Club on Hancock Avenue, downtown Athens. A variety of music played through the audio system as fellow classmates greeted one another and caught up on the past 10 years. Many classmates left to get some dinner nearby at places like Trapeze, Ted's Most Best, Clocked, etc. before returning to Little Kings for some more socializing; which continued into the night. There were approximately 50 people in attendance.

On Saturday, June 11 the CCHS ROTC (led by Lt. Colonel McMickle) provided a tour of the school which was still undergoing renovations made possible by an E-SPLOST referendum. Many of us recalled how the school was not air conditioned and classrooms not carpeted when we were students 30 years ago. Another classmate realized there were no lockers anymore. The ROTC guide told us that students are provided text books in their classrooms but are not assigned text books to carry with them. If a student needs a text book, they must check one out from their teacher first. In fact, most students have "personal learning devices" either provided by the school or brought from home which they use to access their schoolwork, so there is no need to lug around a text book from class to class or to have any that need to be stored in a locker. Other tour highlights included the "press box" (we used to have a shack with an opening, no real window), the Black Box Theater, the lunchroom's food court, and the new ROTC headquarters. Although no official count was kept, about 40 people attended.

On Saturday, June 11 at 6 pm we hosted the "main" reunion event in the Rialto Room of Hotel Indigo, downtown Athens. Officially, 80 people attended with 53 being fellow classmates. In addition to a dinner buffet provided by Epting Events, entertainment by DJ Tic, and a cash bar, highlights of the evening included special guests and former teachers Janice Stowe and Phyllis Field, "Step 'n Repeat," a "Memorabilia Table" with CCHS yearbooks, band uniforms, football programs, newspaper articles, a raffle (to raise funds for a 1986 Class Gift to CCHS), prizes for Class Superlatives, and dancing to 80's music. The main event ended at 11pm at which time the "After Party" kicked off at the 9d's Bar on Clayton Street and continued until the wee hours of the morning. Click here to view photos.
